Episode 7: Robin McCoy

Robin McCoy is an expressionist painter based in Asheville, North Carolina, whose visceral, large-scale oil paintings immerse viewers in a primordial beauty. Born in Charleston, SC, and trained in commercial graphic arts at Savannah College of Art & Design, McCoy broke away from formal constraints to pursue a raw, improvisational practice rooted in the traditions of postwar abstract expressionism and figurative distortion. His paintings feature tangled human and animal forms dissolving into abstract shapes, where the boundary between figure and environment blurs, evoking a sense of primal chaos. What emerges is not mere disorder, but a dark sensuality—a luscious, shocking visual language that is as emotionally unsettling as it is seductively beautiful. His canvases remind us that the raw and chaotic undercurrents of existence can, in their own right, be deeply and disturbingly beautiful.
