Episode 5: Spencer Beals

Spencer Beals is a painter and illustrator based in Asheville, North Carolina, whose intricate, surreal compositions invite viewers into richly layered worlds teeming with movement, metaphor, and meaning. His work evokes a sense of wild wonder — hallucinogenic yet whimsical, philosophical yet playfully bizarre. Each piece reveals an buzz of visual energy. His works are filled with countless interconnected narratives, densely populated visual ecosystems, allowing viewers to become active participants, navigating the visual terrain to discover the micro-dramas and relationships that compose each work.

Working out of his studio at Pink Dog Creative in Asheville’s River Arts District, Beals is a central figure in the city’s arts scene. His practice is deeply informed by nature and the interdependence of living systems, often reflecting the structure of ecological networks in both form and theme. Beyond his studio work, Beals co-founded the Asheville Sketch Book Club — a bi-monthly gathering that fosters creative community and experimentation — and has been a vocal advocate for artist support and visibility in the wake of local challenges, including the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. His commitment to both the craft of art-making and the vitality of Asheville’s artistic community underscores a belief in art as not just expression, but as a mode of knowledge and connection.
